SQL Server 2012 has been one of the most discussed topics in the world of IT recently and it has been garnering a lot of news, most of it on the positive note! The reasons for these are plenty and quite varied. But, one feature that has really impressed one and all are the significant improvement in some of the Business Intelligence (BI) capabilities that have made the lives of Business Analysts’ easier, all round the world.
Let us have a look at some of these features a little more closely!
- PowerView: It’s one of the coolest AdHoc reporting tools that has soon become the darlings of all Business Analysists. You need a SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2010 in the backend, and armed with this you are good to go! A neat GUI lets you keep a tab on the data variance in a very easy manner. Just build a chart with the necessary varying parameters, add a timeline to it and click on the ‘Play Button’ and in a matter of minutes you will get to see the data change in front of your eyes and you shall have all the raw ingredients to build your analysis on!
- SSIS Configure and Execute with T-SQL : Another highly appreciated and noted feature in the SQL 2012 is the significant improvement in the SSIS Configuration and it’s execution through T-SQL. Your databases are stored in a powerful package now, which itself is complete with a set of complex procedures which can be directly executed via T-SQL. The biggest advantage is that now one doesn’t need to manage files and tables separately. They can be managed as a single entity with the help of the packages they are stored in and the parameters governing them can be called upon, much like Functions in C, through these packages.
- SSIS Undo: This is a huge relief for all SSIS developers. They know how much this latest option means to them. I mean you are working on this all important document and accidentally deleted a paragraph. Previously, you had to write it from scratch again but now you have the option of ‘undo’ing it!
