4500 Sites Migration from IIS6.0 (Windows 2003) to IIS 8.0 (Windows 2012). The main challenge was to migrate 4500 sites from IIS6.0 to IIS8.0 within 2 months.
First, the main scope was to migrate 4500 sites from IIS6.0 i.e. windows 2003 to IIS 8.0 i.e. windows 2012. Second, the main challenge was both the servers were production servers and no staging servers. This project was of NIC and i had 40 VMs in 2003 and 45 VMs in 2012. So I didn’t got any idea from the net then I developed a tool for the sites migration. That tool was migrated only configuration of three sites from IIS6.0 to IIS8.0 but for the sites content I used “Robocopy” command to transfer data from one VM to another. If one VM’s data was having 500GB then it took around one day to copy the data. After migrating one VM I had to live that particular VM between 8AM to 9AM because all the sites were of ministry sites means these sites were directly deals with government sectors. This was again challenge to live a VM because I had to migrated sites from production to production that means I had to remove all IP Address from previous VM and add those IP Address to New VM and for that it took atleast 2 hrs to complete that task. But fortunately I reduced this 2 hrs into 1 hr by creating batch file that automatically remove IPs from previous VM and add IPs into New VM.
After competition of this project I got appreciation mail from NIC and received an award of couple movie tickets from my previous Company I had learnt so many things regarding IIS migration as this was a challenge task for me as I didn’t knew anything regarding IIS8.0 because that was new version of IIS .Tags:
