With regard to the cloud computing, there are different types of services that the CSP’s (cloud service providers) offer namely IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. Now if you are wondering if the last three letters of the acronyms stand for the same thing, then you are absolutely right. IaaS stands for Infrastructure as a Service, PaaS stands for platform as a service whereas SaaS stands for Software as a Service.
IaaS – IaaS stands for infrastructure as a service, the full form in itself is self explanatory. The servers, storage and network devices that you require to set up your infrastructure can be hired for a monthly rental as opposed to buying it and setting it up inside your premises. It not only helps you save on a large capital expenditure but also helps you outsource the manageability of the entire infrastructure.
PaaS – PaaS stands for platform as a service. This type is also alternatively known as middleware. With PaaS you can hire various items like hardware, operating systems, storage, network capacity, virtualized servers, and other associated services.
SaaS – SaaS stands for software as a service. SaaS is the most common form of cloud service that people end up using. Are you having a Skype account to do voice calls and video calls? Then you are availing SaaS. Hosting solution providers also offer various software on a hosted model eg. CRM, Document Management System etc. What this does is ensure that you do not have to spend a huge amount on buying the software outright. You can just use it as in a pay as you use model on an OPEX model.
So the above few paragraphs sum up the different types of service in a very simple way. Most cloud service providers offer the three different types to their customers on a pay per use model. So no matter whether it’s IaaS, PaaS or SaaS, it fulfills the ultimate goal of the consumer; allow them to avail their application or software online through internet without having to go through the pain of maintaining or managing the same.Tags:
